Wow.  Uh, erm.  This does detract significantly.  Docutils' API for parsing it mitigates my parsing concerns, and this now mitigates my UI concerns.
Although... I've been using it and editing text inside of tables, resize and reformat them for the last 20 minutes or so and it is both mesmerising and disturbing.  I thought artist-mode would be the weirdest thing I'd ever see in Emacs, but this tops it easily.
